Milan, June 3rd, 2014 - Milan Internet Exchange (MIX) announces the launch of a new PoP (Point of presence) in Palermo thanks to the collaboration with GARR, the National Research and Education Network.

The new PoP, hosted inside the Computer Centre division of the University of Palermo, has been activated and tested some days ago and it is now able to accept the connections of new operators who will be present at MIX as any other of the 140 operators connected to the data center in Milan, thanks to a high-speed connection between Palermo and the headquarters in Milan.

The realization of the point of presence in Palermo represents the first step in a broader strategy aimed at strengthening the role of Italy in the field of international telecommunications and encouraging the infrastructural development of Sicily and Southern Italy in general, opening new opportunities for the diffusion of innovative services by public and private subjects.

It is no coincidence the choice to collaborate in this initiative with GARR, which is engaged in the realization of a state-of-the -art quad play ultrabroadband network with GARR-X Progress project.
